Thank You Direct Line Manchester!

Our theme for the anniversary events is “A Celebration of Community” and nothing embodies that more than the team from Direct Line Manchester who turned up at St Peter’s Church today to spend several hours doing volunteer work in the Church graveyard.

Every year the team leave their office in Manchester and spend a day working for a local charity or organisation. In the past, they’ve supported Cancer Research and Cash For Kids, and this year, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the day that John met Paul, and the legacy of that meeting, they came to help the regular team of Church volunteers as they tidied up the graveyard in preparation for the anniversary celebrations next week!

There’s often a lot of banter between Liverpool and Manchester but, when it comes to the important things — like a belief in the importance of community, or coming together in times of crisis such as the tragic events at the recent Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena — the bond between the two cities is plain to see, and will never be broken.

Thank you, Direct Line Manchester, from us all at St Peter’s Church — not only for your hard work today, but also for your ongoing commitment to the community!

Once again we are overwhelmed by the support of local organisations for our anniversary celebrations! Thank you, Tesco Woolton, for your generosity! Every little certainly does help, and you have helped a lot! We really are extremely grateful.

Tesco is an important part of Woolton village, and the support of Tesco is further proof why the theme for the anniversary – A Celebration of Community – is so apt. You really are a champion for our community!

Photo Mystery – Can You Help?

Mark Ashworth has sent us this fabulous photograph, taken in St Peter’s Church Hall in the late 1950s or early 1960s, and we’d love to find out as much as we can about it!

We wondered if it might be a gathering of the Church Youth Club, as there’s a box of 45s on the table on the left hand side, but if anyone can help with any information, we’d be very grateful.

Woolton in the 1950s – Part 2

We have to confess that some of our most favourite photos from James Davis’ wonderful collection that shows Woolton in the 1950s are in this batch! One of them contains James’ shadow, which we think is really beautiful.

The procession featured in this collection took place in the winter (see the lack of leaves on the trees). We thought it might be for Remembrance Sunday, but we can’t see if the people watching are wearing poppies.

See if you can spot the “beatle” (but remember that we can’t always spell things correctly … )

Celebrating Community at St Peter’s Church Fete

Rod Davis of the Quarrymen has very kindly allowed us to share some of the photos that his dad took of the Church Fete in days gone by! One of the really interesting thing about these photos is the way that a theme for the 1953 fete was the Queen’s coronation, which had taken place on June 2.

From July 5th-9th 2017, St Peter’s Church and Bishop Martin CE Primary School welcomed the world to Woolton Village as we celebrated the 60th anniversary of the meeting of two seemingly ordinary Liverpool lads who went on to change the world. On that day, no-one dreamed what John meeting Paul would lead to.

The events of that day, 60 years ago, that took place on what is now the playing field for Bishop Martin CE Primary School and in St Peter’s Church Hall, showed that magic can happen anywhere, even at a local village fete, when a community comes together. Even without the Beatles connection, that alone is worth celebrating!

We want to share our blessings with as many people as possible, and so during 2017 we will be holding a series of celebratory events, including having the Church Hall and School grounds open during the anniversary weekend in July and International Beatle Week celebrations in August.

This website is run by the A-Team — volunteers from St Peter’s Church and Bishop Martin CE Primary School PTA — and is intended as a hub of information on the history and heritage of the Church and School, as well as future events.
