Corporal Thomas Leonard Cromwell is listed as L Cromwell on St Peter’s Memorial. Despite his best efforts, Tom Canty was unable to find anyone listed as “L Cromwell” on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. However, he did discover a T. Leanord Cromwell on the Halewood memorial and so we believe that this is ‘our’ Corporal Cromwell.

Corporal Thomas Leonard Cromwell was born in 1891 in Grassendale. The 1911 census records him as living at Green Bank, Hunt’s Cross with his parents, Benjamin and Anne, and his brother’s Sydney (28) and John (25). Thomas, Leonard, age 20, was employed as a bank clerk.

He served in the 18th Battalion of the King’s Liverpool Regiment, serial number 16706, from November 7, 1915 until October 18, 1916 when he was killed in action, aged 26.
