Harry Briscoe

Private Harry Briscoe, the eldest son of Peter and Elizabeth Briscoe, was born in Seacombe in 1894. At the time of the 1911 census, 15-year-old Harry was living at 2 High Street, Woolton, with his mother, sister Eliza, aged 14 and brother Peter, aged 12.

Harry attended Gateacre School, and the Woolton Wesleyan Church and Sunday School. After leaving school, he was employed by Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, providing the main source of income for his mother after his father died.

He was called up in January 1917, and served in the 4th Battalion of the King’s Liverpool Regiment, serial number 59279. He was killed in action on September, 1917, after being struck when a nearby shell exploded.

Harry is Remembered with Honour in the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
