Private George Henry Haigh born in Woolton on May 23, 1888, to George L and Annie Louisa Haigh (nee Fenn). He was baptised at St Peter’s Church, Woolton on August 5, 1888.
The 1901 census records the 12 year-old George as living with his parents and brother Edmund (14), sister Annie (9) and uncle George A Grace at The Gardens (Highfield), Acrefield Road.

His father was a gardener and must have taught his son well because, ten years later, young George was employed as an Assistant Gardener by the Royal Family at the Royal Windsor Gardens.

George served in the 2nd Royal Marines Division of the Royal Marine Light Infantry, serial number, PO/1752(S). He died in action at Passchendaele on October 26, 1917, aged 29.

As well as on the St Peter’s Church war memorial, George is remembered in the (WW1) War Service Roll of members of The Royal Households and Estates of the King and Queen (Royal Windsor Gardens).
